Exploring Local Music: One Drop Redemption at Hangar 24

One Drop Redemption

It’s ya girl, Lendsey, back with a short and sweet blog, giving you some of the good things like bands we have seen and art we have made.

Yesterday, Matthew did sound for One Drop Redemption. From what I heard, it was a pretty good time. They were up on stage, jamming out their vibes, having a great time. They were even on stage for 3 hours, showing everyone what that reggae sound is about.

They played at a place called Hangar 24 down in Riverside. Matthew said the place was really nice with a big back patio in a beautiful area. The place apparently had some killer food too, and I was sure jealous when he got them asada fries and sent me a picture.

On the art half of what I’ve been up to, I’ve been crafting and creating, drawing both traditionally and digitally. I won’t show everything I’ve made recently, but I will give you a taste, and you guys can see more next time.

Here is the trading card I made yesterday. Don’t worry, more are on the way of my own art work and others to feature.

Speaking of art, if you guys would like to see your art featured on the next blog, send it over, and we will choose one to feature. Who knows, you might just get mentioned! Email your submissions to Kendra@bhmusic.net if you’d like to be featured here! All mediums and styles are welcome. Who knows, maybe you will get your art onto an EP or Album cover or one of our many associated musical acts will want to commission you for their next big thing. We are here to support our local art communities so let us help YOU get out there and make your own magic happen. (We will never use your art for any purpose without explicit permission!!!)

A word from Pi:

Oi! How’s it hang? Pi here with a few extra bits… I went on an adventure down to the dez this weekend to catch my good friends from Legendary Hangover play a show at the Hilltop and attempt to finish up some loose ends for the new EP’s we’ve got releasing soon. Did I manage to get any actual work done, or did I end up sitting on my butt with the homie getting some much needed rest? Def was the latter y’all. What I can say is that taking some time to slow down and reset is often more important than rushing a deadline in most cases. These EP’s will release on time regardless and the work we do will be 100% more polished and effective if we are rested when we do it.

How was the show at Hilltop you ask? Well, seeing Legendary Hangover for the first time was a blast. Their rendition of Get Low ft GHippy was something else. They only learned it for that event because their show was double booked with a birthday party, but unfortunately the birthday gal who requested the song had left before they got to actually play it! BOOO! Hangover was preceded by Lyonz, JB Music, G8wayy, and GHippy. I hadn’t actually managed to catch any of them besides GHippy before so it was nice to finally catch acts I’ve covered in the blog via third party recollection before. I won’t lie, I’m usually one to seek out hip hop fan and may not have sought these acts out on my own, but I was pleasantly surprised by their sets.

While I don’t seek out certain genres, please don’t get me wrong, each of the acts at this show are absolutely good at what they do. G.Hippy absolutely KILLED Get Low with Hangover and I had a blast watching them come together. To each their own though, as they say. Like a Pokemon, 10/10 would catch em all again.

While each act brought their best and it was a good show, going to this event brought up a lot of interesting points regarding the planning of shows, booking additional bands to fill time, sound engineering woes, and navigating challenging venue issues all of which come up every time someone sets up a show locally. It wasn’t specifics of this show that brought up all these bits, but the double booking on the venue’s part did inspire a rather in-depth conversation with another local musician who made some really interesting points about the challenges of being in a local band. Because of this, yours truly is considering drafting a few additional blogs re: local music industry niches and how to find/fill yours, navigating booking and planning your shows at local venues and what you can do to avoid auditory surprises at your gig, and maybe even how to plan cohesive shows with other artists that will elevate your set rather than make you the odd man out. These are things I see happen OFTEN at the local level and it’s something we can definitely help y’all with. Trust me, we all want to succeed in this goofy ever-mutating music industry so let’s keep working together to get our acts together, polished, and stadium-stage-worthy. I know I still have a lot of work to do, heck, it’s been so long since I’ve sung professionally I need to do the work all over again to get comfortable with my own voice, but wanting to make progress is where it all starts, right?

Studio News:

On a final and more fantastic note, I believe our search for a replacement second engineer may finally be over. Know what that means? It means we will be available for more bookings in the near future. “BuT aRe ThEy GoOd?!” Uhh yeah, of course they are. I’ve not met many people at the local level with the kind of music theory knowledge, performance enthusiasm, and writing/composing complicated pieces as this guy. And do you really think Matt would throw just anyone out there? Nah, that’s why it’s taken so long to find someone. I will let you all know asap when they’re ready to make your show the best sounding live music experience around. Thanks for stopping by. Until next time, keep your friends close and your guitar picks closer.
