Tl;dr
We went to two shows, recorded two podcast episodes, and now mama is BIG tired. Also doing lots of art stuff. Nighty night.
What a week it’s been… I am officially exhausted after a very long weekend of shows and (dramatic pause…) FINALLY recording our first two episodes of the Behind the SoundBoard Podcast. I don’t usually make it to many shows these days, but last weekend I attended two, of sorts, for two different bands. I was already tired going into the weekend, but hopeful that things would go well on Saturday the 18th. What I didn’t know was exactly how my performance anxiety was secretly gnawing at the peripheral of my consciousness.
SHOWS:
05/17/2024 – Friday night, Humble Crumb and Mike Storm took over Frogee’s bar for a night of killer covers and Rap. I hung out long enough to catch my good friend’s Humble Crumb do MOST of their thing, also managing to watch bits of Tad and Jenae’s sets in between catching up with some of you folks I don’t run into very often. It was a great set from each of them, as always, and while I was stoked to be there watching my homies rock out…the brain weasels attacked. As midnight drew near Matt and I fled back to the home studio to crash out before having to get an early start the next morning.

05/18/2024 – Revolver band played a private birthday party on Saturday night. Greg, who came to the podcast recording earlier in the day, invited us all to this VIP event to catch a set of the band, grab some great food, and kick it with his awesome family. We did exactly that. I got to catch up a bit with an old friend, Mike Bailey, from Revolver and they played a killer set. Unfortunately for me, I was absolutely EXHAUSTED by this point so we only stayed til they took their first break. It was really good to see everyone, but I’ve not been that tired in ages. If any of G’s family reads this, I’m sorry if I seemed like a zombie. I’d had little sleep, and a lot of mental bandwidth had been spent talking for 6 hours earlier in the day for the podcast. I’m garbage when I’m that tired, but thank you all for your hospitality.

PODCAST:
05/18/2024 – Saturday morning was a bit rushed for me as I had to take my car to a shop for some much desired customization. (tint…what? I get sunburns while driving dude!) Before we could do that we had to get our shit together and pack all the gear we needed for recording into Matt’s car and make a hard run for coffee. We ended up meeting Doug Strange for a little food before heading to the ranch to record at one. Ian Seabolt, our friend and podcast co-host, was able to get to the ranch earlier than expected so we got down to business by 1.
Honestly, it started out a bit scrambled. We had a guest coming, we had to test the mics and the cables, and the headphones…there are almost always going to be bugs in your system, even if you think you’re beyond such things. Never forget PEBCAK kids…but replace keyboard with whatever it is you’re trying to use and voila… user error, damaged gear, ghosts in the system, ADHD… Eventually though, we were rolling.

We intended to record two episodes in one session. We didn’t have a clear time goal for these initial episodes as we tried to find our footing and catch a groove. We had THE Greg Paz of MaDu_Music, our #1 streaming artist and the homie that’s doing our podcast music, stop by for a guest spot in the first (actually 2nd) episode. Because of time constraints and scheduling with our guest we ended up having to do things out of order. It made it a bit harder for my ND-butt to keep track of what parts of the outline we’d actually covered during the interview/discussion, but when G left we were able to go back and re-do a few bits.

This is a project that I’ve taken the lead on and because I’ve been driving this rickety broomstick it meant I also ended up being the one who opens up the episodes, does the episode transitions, the promo spots (if any), calls things out and keeps things on track. It’s been a while since I’ve truly had to do any kind of voice or character work and even longer since I’ve sung. I didn’t actually have to sing this round, thank globs, but I did have to actively do voicework in front of 5-6 other people.

For those of you that don’t know me, I have some pretty intense battles with stage fright and performance anxiety. This was about to be terrifying…I was hyped, exhausted, and coming down off the stress of months of planning and writing and research… I was sure I was going to be terrible, or panic and make someone else do those parts. Well guess what happened? I just did it. And it was fine. The first one was terrible and I asked to redo it later after Greg left, but dang it if it didn’t actually go better than I thought. We all did pretty damn well for the first time recording! We actually got some good content and I’m looking forward to sharing it with you guys soon-ish. Rhey is also a rock star and got right into it with us. It was fun guys. Hopefully we will all have a smidge more energy next time.

I won’t go into detail about what we actually recorded yet, but we did talk to Matt WAYYY more than we originally intended. He’s going to be joining us permanently if I have my way. (don’t worry, I will) Ian, Peter and Doug were great and I thank them all from the cockles of my heart for participating in my madness so willingly. You guys rock, we should’ve done this ages ago. What else would you folks like us to answer on the podcast or here in the blog in more detail? Hit us up, let us know! Slide smoothly into our DM’s if that’s most comfortable, just jump in and join the party folks! If you are interested in being a guest or doing an interview for Behind the SoundBoard contact me, Pi (aka Kendra) @blackhatofficial08 on Instagram or Facebook, leave a comment below, or find us out there friends. We want to hear from you!
ART:
I’m currently working on too many things kids. I hooked up with English Entertainment to help out with some stuff for an upcoming show I won’t talk about because it isn’t ours and I don’t have all the deets. I will share them with y’all when it’s time, but I plan to toss some of my wares at this show for a raffle. If you want some cool schwag stay tuned for the flier release. It’s gonna be fun. I think I will be liquidating all my old tie dye merch at this show because why carry it around so much when I don’t do vendor shows but once a year or less? Everything tie dye will be between $1-10. If you want artwork, I will be doing live drawings for fun because why the heck not?!
Aside from that, I’m also about to start sewing some quilts for my wife*/GF*/Rizz which will take a solid amount of my time. I’m trying to throw a lot of fun projects into the mix just to see what falls out. I have a painting half done that will be a companion to an older Trogdor the Burninator painting I did a few years ago. Homsar, complete with upside-down background will be bringing his best foot flowered, right to my back office now that Trog had to come home from the hackerspace he’s been living in for the last few years. RIP NSL…
That’s it…long blog is long.
